Why is Ukraine so important to Russia? To understand this, we need to look at a few things: history, geography, and geopolitics. Historically, Ukraine and Russia share deep roots. Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, is often considered the birthplace of Russian civilization, the heart of Kievan Rus'. This shared heritage, often romanticized by Moscow, creates a sense of siblinghood or even a parent-child relationship in Russia's eyes, with Russia seeing itself as the elder brother. For Putin and many Russians, Ukraine is not just a neighboring country; it's an inseparable part of their historical and cultural identity, a spiritual core of "Mother Rus'." Geographically, Ukraine is critically i...

Medvedev on his win against Paul: "In the first game, I think I saved three break points, but he still managed to break me. I took a risk on my second serve, missed it – that happens. Then I had a break point. Another one – at 1-2. Of course, if I had the chance to break back, I would have tried, but at that moment I was just playing risky. I'm glad that in the third set I managed to step up my serve and play reliably. That was the key factor." @tennisdrot

Djokovic on the match against Yunchaokete: "Playing against a Chinese tennis player in China is definitely not the most pleasant experience. I'm sure the atmosphere will be incredible. He will have tremendous support. But at the same time, I like how I'm playing right now, and I believe in my chances against any opponent. I just hope to be physically ready and fresh. Now the conditions are a bit cooler than in the first days of training. The ball slows down a bit, the bounce becomes lower. I think this benefits players like …

That Saturday when you just slightly lose touch with current events: — Rybakina loses her first match as world number one to Charaeva — Sabalenka lost to Bartunkova in two sets — Timofeeva had her watch stolen and returned — Sinner still withdrew from Shanghai What else did I miss?

Rafael Nadal was involved in creating "The Tennis Player" wine. He created it together with the Spanish winemaking family Gil at their own winery. And it reminded me of being in 2021 at the "Spanish Deli" on Myasnitskaya Street, where (oh wow!) there were many Spaniards. Conversations at various tables merged into one, and soon we were discussing coastlines, Gaudi, the Prado, and, of course, Nadal. And then one of the interlocutors said he was a friend of a friend of a brother of a relative of Nadal's and often visited his home in Mallorca. My eyes widened in surprise…

Mirra will contend with Qinwen for the title in Beijing. In the semifinals, the Chinese player proved stronger than Elise Mertens 7/5 6/2. This will be only the second tour-level match between Zheng and Andreeva. Notably, the first and so far only time the girls played was also in Beijing two years ago, but it wasn't a title match, but a quarterfinal. @tennisologia

Zverev in an interview: "I think the real emotions will come when I actually see the number 1 next to my name. I'm sure it will be a special moment. For now, I'm still ranked second in the world, which is quite funny. And, of course, I secured the year-end top spot largely because Jannik, unfortunately, had to withdraw from the competition. But I think when it actually happens, that moment will be special for me."
